This collection contains 49 black and white photographs of the Allgates estate in Haverford, Pennsylvania. The photos show exterior views of the mansion and outbuildings, interior views of the greenhouse and library, the iris garden, and the quarry garden. Three portraits are of Mrs. Mary Helen Wingate Lloyd. Several other photos are of botanical illustrations and of a 1599 catalog of trees. Also included is a photo of Mrs. Lloyd's bookplate. Some of the photos were taken by Mattie Edwards Hewitt and Samuel H. Gottscho. A 1929 map of the estate and its landscaping, drawn by Lester H. Sellers, is also part of the collection.

The Allgates estate, located in Haverford, Pennsylvania, was owned by Horatio Gates Lloyd and his wife Mary Helen Wingate Lloyd. Born in Middletown, Delaware, in 1867, Horatio Gates Lloyd held two law degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, but made his fortune as a banker. Mary Helen Wingate Lloyd (1868–1934) was an American horticulturist who was a founding member of the American Iris Society and creator of a celebrated "iris bowl" garden. Wingate was born in New York in 1868, one of four children of George Wood Wingate and Susan Prudence (Man) Wingate.
